The ZIP code 80515 has a population of 914 according to the 2000 census. The first people to live in Longmont were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around Mount Hamilton. A post office called "Lone Pine" was established in 1864, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1868. The first settlers were men from Chicago, Illinois; they arrived on horseback and built a log cabin on a hill overlooking Longmont Creek. They named their settlement "Hillcrest." In 1875, they founded the town of Longmont on land that had been purchased from Cemeteries Company No. 2 for $5 per acre (0.50 hectare). John Sanger came to Longmont with his family in 1876 and started the first store there. In 1880, Denver & Rio Grande Western Railway extended its line east through Longmont into Weld County and began buying land here for construction of its railroad stations; as a result, many businesses sprang up around the new stations: among them was Mr.(?)'s Store which became one ofLongmont's most popular tourist attractions because it served as both a depot for trains coming into town from outlying mining districts as well as an early stop for visitors on their way to see Rocky Mountain National Park or Aspen Park Resort
