In 1923, Lumberjack Dave Rathbun became mayor after becoming first elected via secret ballot following a campaign against incumbent Mayor John Rafferty Jr.; Rathbun would serve out his entire four-year term before being impeached for bribery charges later that year During World War II long range bombers were used over Longmont by Air Force General Donald Byrd duringair operations over Colorado Springs In 1948 Mayor Harry Chandler tried unsuccessfully to get statehood for Longmont but did succeed in getting annexation from neighboring Fort Collins In 1957 statehood was granted to Longmont along with nearby Montrose In 1964 voters passed an ordinance legalizing gambling within city limits City Council voted 5-0 to annex University Park Mesa into the City Limits effective January 1st 1965 On July 9th 1967 KUSA Television aired an interview with then Mayor Harry Chandler about plans for developing Mesa which had recently been annexed into Longmountain National Forest
