In 1902 David Ludden established Dutton Printing Company as a printer for local newspapers which continued until it closed its doors in 1984 due to high water bills brought on by state budget cuts during Bill Clinton's administration; Ludden also donated some of the company's equipment to Aurora University for use there as part of their printing program.. In 1912 Paton Manufacturing Co., founded by John A paton, opened a machine shop and foundry on South Broadway near Union Station; this plant produced cigarettes for American Cigar Products (ACP) until BATC bought ACP in 1970 In 1916 Atchison Wagon Road Depot was built adjacent to Union Station serving passengers traveling eastbound along I-25 from Denver; Amtrak started service between Littleton/Aurora and New York City via Littleton on May 1, 1971 Passenger trains stopped running between Littleton and New York City at Auroras Amtrak station beginning November 20th 1969 following the merger of Amtrak with United Airlines effective January 1st 1970 . On October 15th 1911 Mount Vernon Hotel owners Harry & Irene Shaw leased space behind their hotel across from First National Bank building where they later opened their own hotel which still stands today (now known as Four Points Sheraton). According to published sources Harry Shaw never actually moved into his new hotel building but rather used it as office space until December 1942 when he sold it to Consolidated GasCorp because he could no longer afford rents .. The original Mount Vernon Hotel may have been destroyed or looted during World War II when many buildings within downtown Littleton were damaged or destroyed by artillery shelling utilized by Nazi Germany retreating forces
