The first permanent settlers in what would become Littleton were farmers who arrived during the early 1800s. By 1824, a post office had been established at Littleton and by 1830 there were two stores and four families living there. In 1836, construction began on what would become Fort Collins as part of a military fortification system against Indian attacks. The fort served as an artillery depot and garrison until its closure in 1860 following the Mexican-American War. In 1865, gold was discovered at Pikes Peak and soon after this area became known as "Goldschmidt's Gold Country". This led to rapid settlement by miners who started arrive in droves starting around 1870. By 1880, mining operations had created a significant amount of dust which caused health problems for many residents including respiratory difficulties that led to death fromDust mites.. In 1886, fortifications around Fort Collins were tightened up following an attempted raid by gangsters led by John Dillinger which resulted in three dead soldiers and several injured civilians.. Shortly thereafter however another group claiming allegiance to Dillinger attacked neighboring towns resulting in two fatalities among local citizens before he was captured alive months later At age 22

Littleton is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,515 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Littleton was platted on November 10, 1871 byolf Benson and Wm.J. McNaughton as a town to serve the county seat of Weld. The name originated from an early settler's children's game called "Tiny Town". The first post office in Littleton was established on December 12, 1872. It was renamed for John A. Littlefield in 1897 after he donated land for a school district and depot in honor of his father-in-law, Reverend George A. Smith (1812–1898). In 1903, Littleton incorporated as a city under the laws of Colorado with its own government and currency system known as "The Greenbacks." In 1907, local entrepreneur Oscar Saeger built what has come to be known as Saeger's Cafe on Seventh Avenue between Main Street and Broadway in downtown Littleton – Grand opening date: September 3rd 1907 Saeger served as mayor of Littleton from 1912 to 1916 and again from 1920 to 1924 while serving concurrently as chairman of the board of directors of First National Bank & Trust Company; Mayor Saeger also founded Municipal Utility District No 1 which provided gas service within the city limits In 1918 developer Harry Weingarten purchased alluvial soils east of Interstate 25 Dam Creek near present day Highlands Ranch Boulevard southbound off I-25wy for $1 million He began work immediately upon receipt of title deed from Big Timber Mining Company Limited Partnership dated October 11th 1918 He named that area Highland Park after himself his wife Harriett Weingarten (1902-1971), daughter of Theodore Roosevelt’s Vice President James Buchanan Weingarten (1856-1945) In 1929 he sold alluvial soils along Deer Valley Road north and east thereof including those areas now located in Aurora to Republic Steel Corporation for $2 million
In 1876, the Littleton post office was established. In 1881, Littleton incorporated as a city and soon became one of the most populous cities in Colorado. The first store in Littleton opened in 1882. By 1886, Littleton had over 100 businesses and 1,500 residents. In 1895, the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad arrived in town and began to provide economic growth. In 1907,Littleton erected its first skyscraper - the City Hall Building - which remain as one of Littleton's most notable landmarks today.
