From 1861 until 1892 guns were only available through mail order from England at a price of $2 per barrelplus freight charges which totaled $24 per shipment! Littleton is a town in Colorado, United States. The population was 9,026 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Littleton is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish traders who stopped at what is now Littleton in 1602 on their way from Pueblo to Mexico City. The first European settlement in what became Littleton was by Mormons who came here from Utah in 1847 during the Gold Rush. Mormon pioneers named their settlement after President George Washington, Jr.'s home state of Virginia. A post office called Independence was established in 1868, but it changed its name to Littleton in 1872 because Uniontown had already been renamed Fort Collins and there was no need for another separate post office. In 1907, an oil well was discovered just east of town and began production immediately; this led to increased development around the well site and soon new subdivisions were popping up all over town center like never before. In 1916, when Denver-Boulder Airport opened nearby, Littleton saw its biggest growth yet as people commuting to jobs in downtown started moving into town instead of outlying villages such as Aurora or Golden Valley near airport boundaries thereby stimulating further development around that area as well (which still exists today). One downside though has always been a high concentration of commercial buildings right next to Interstate 25 which can lead to traffic congestion during peak hours outside business hours or during events like Broncos football games or Colorado State University football tournaments which happen frequently throughout summertime. The area was also rich in coal seams which made it an ideal place to set up shop as miners started arriving from all over the Western United States. In 1876, the population of Littleton was just over 1,000. By 1920, it had grown to more than 5,000. The town was named for John A. Littlefield, a major in the Colorado Volunteers during the Civil War and one of the first white men to live in Littleton. The first post office was established in 1879, and the town developed a railroad station and other infrastructure to support its burgeoning population. In 1904, Littleton became an incorporated municipality. In 1946, it became an unincorporated community again before becoming a city on July 1 of that year.
