Littleton is located in the western edge of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area and is bordered by Aurora to the east and north, Golden to the west and south, and Lakewood to the southeast. It is named after David Lloyd Littlefield. The first settlers in what would become Littleton were three brothers who came from Massachusetts in 1855: John Hiltzik, Josiah Garnett, and Ebenezer Farnsworth. They built a cabin on a hill overlooking the present-day town. In 1865 they started an agricultural cooperative which grew into one of Colorado's largest food producers. The early years of Littleton were difficult; it was completely surrounded by Indian country and there was no easy way for pioneers to access markets or transportation. However, through hard work and perseverance little change happened until 1917 when Denver born George Arapahoe started marketing his potatoes from his farm outside of town (now known as Northglenn). This helped make Littleton one of Colorado's leading agricultural towns during its earliest days. In 1915 Alfred Prentice opened a general store in what became known as "Prentice's Prairie" which soon became one of Littleton's most important commercial districts because it offered good selection of fresh produce along with other basics such as clothes, gasolineoline supplies, cigarettes and shoes. Littleton is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,351 at the 2010 census. Littleton is the county seat of Weld County. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit what is now Littleton was Juan Rodriguez de Alvarado on July 10, 1547. He and his men explored what is now northwestern Colorado before travelling south to Trinidad on September 8 of that same year and returning on October 11. Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto visited Littleton on September 25, 1541 while exploring the area between Albuquerque and Trinidad. In 1868, after being located for years at the junction of Routes 7 and 14, Littleton was moved from its original site near Peach Creek to its current location near Union Boulevard and North First Street due to a water shortage caused by heavy flooding during wintertime from nearby peach orchards. When new construction began in northeast Littleton in 1928 it destroyed most of the old village center which had been built around a square courthouse with two shops (one blacksmith shop) an farmstead (now home to several dogs), three churches (St Peters Lutheran Church, First Baptist Church South Park Presbyterian Church - both founded in 1892), a school house (1864), an ice cream parlor (/shop), an employment hall (/store), an auto body shop (/ garage / mechanicslaughter store) as well as residences for 100 people including 50adobe/cottage homes built c1920-1930). much later there were also 3 large single family dwellings built post-war: one dating from pre-WWII; one from 1950s made out of red brick; one from early 1960s made out of white stucco In 1955 Pueblo Bonito opened within walking distance north of Union Boulevard opposite Employment Hall where Mexicans worked during daytime hours doing odd jobs for American citizens just prior to statehood in 1912 when most Mexicans left over fear raids by US authorities
Littleton is a town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. Littleton is located on the eastern edge of the county and is bordered by Aspen to the north, Thornton to the east, Golden to the south and Pueblo to the west. The first settler in what would become Littleton was George Hinkle in 1876. He built a cabin on his farmstead near present-day Illinois Street and Cache Creek Road. Hinkle's son, John Hinkle*, also homesteaded land in Littleton. The first post office was established in 1879 and it continued operation until 1907. In 1881, William Lyon began irrigating crops near present-day Park Meadows Drive and Cache Creek Road with water from Cache Creek itself. This allowed for early development of agriculture as well as housing for settlers along Cache Creek Boulevard which later became known as "the artery of Littleton". In 1902, Leland Stanford Junior founded Stanford University* in nearby Palo Alto and soon after developed Helvetia Ranch* which lay within what would become Littleton limits.*Helvetia Ranch would provide access to water resources necessary for agricultural production throughout much of Weld County while also hosting some high profile events such as Stanley Cup Finals contests between NHL teams Red Wings and Bruins† *Stanford University’s history can be traced back all the way to 1785 when James McCloskey† donated lands including Palo Alto College (now Stanford University) to The Stanford brothers who then created an institution that still thrives today.* *The original campus included 4 buildings: A Library/Dentist Office building (1891), Recitation Hall (1892), Old Main Building (1893), Academic Quadrangle (1901).
