In 1876, A. H. Littleton founded the town of Littleton on a tract of land he had purchased from the Apache Indians. The town was named after Littleton's father-in-law, Elijah Woodruff, who had homesteaded in the area some time earlier. The first school in Littleton was built in 1877 and served grades K-5. In 1886, a post office was established in the town and remained in operation until 1907.
