Littlefield, an early settler in that area. In 1902, the name was changed to honor General George Custer and his regiment during the American Civil War. The first post office opened in 1886 and closed in 1916; its last letter was "L". In 1916, Littleton became a city when it annexed part of neighboring Aurora.
