Lakewood is an unincorporated community located in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,421 as of the 2010 census. The name "Lakewood" is derived from a local mineral water discovery at the site of present-day Lakewood and its surrounding area in 1865. The first post office for this area was established in 1868. It remained that way until it was renamed to honor John D. Rockefeller's home town of Westchester in 1912. Lakewood experienced significant growth during the early 20th century as a result of its location on the main line between Denver and Fort Collins. This spurred industrial development around what are now several shopping malls and other businesses districts including southwest corner of I-25 and US Highway 24W and east side of I-25 just east of Interstate 25 near Loop 610 South. Today, much less industry exists in these areas with only a few small shops remaining close to downtown Lakewood while most residents commute into larger cities or towns nearby such as Golden or Loveland for their jobs. However, some new businesses have started up recently around busy intersections on I-25 south/southwest of downtown (the intersection currently known as "The Grove") which could potentially bring large economic benefits to the community if they can be successful given that traffic congestion along this stretch has become increasingly common due to increased development along I-25 southward from Aurora to Westminster over the past few years.

Lakewood is a town in El Paso County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aurora–Lakewood–Denver Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to settle in what is now Lakewood were the Hahns and their families who came from Germany in 1875. They built a log cabin on the banks of the South Fork of the Gunnison River. In 1881, John Wesley Powell took an Exploratory Expedition up the Gunnison River and named it for his home town of Waco, Texas – which he had visited while on his way to discover Nevada Mines and national parks. The townsite that developed around Lakewood was laid out by James Mather in 1887 as part of a major land grant from President Grover Cleveland to improve transportation routes through central Colorado. In 1912, General George Smedley Butler organized and commanded U.S.-Mexican War Veterans Battalion No. 2 (Cordillera) which camped near present-day Lakewood for 3 months during winter before moving north into Canoga Park Valley where they destroyed many Mexican villages including Atchitán de las Animas (Atchitán Lakes), located about east-northeast of town on I-25 just south of milepost 9 on Highway 6A border with Mexico; this event remain one of history's most significant military engagements ever fought between two countries over control of an area larger than Connecticut or Rhode Island combined! In 1927, Denver mayor John Eager Bullock proposed that a lake be formed at what are now North Park Drive and West Florissant Avenue due to concerns over flooding caused by heavy rains during summer seasons when runoff flowed off slopes into reservoirs located northeast and southwest of town Limits Creek watershed). On September 17th 1929 Mayor Bullock directed City Engineer Harry Sievers to prepare plans for constructing dam across Payette River outlet feeding waters into Kremmling Reservoir approximately 4 miles northwest cornering N 31° 44′ 07″ W 091° 58′ 32″ SL with total storage capacity estimated at 350 acre feet (approximate surface area: 43 acres) under controlled release program after detailed engineering study found no feasible alternative except dam across Payette River outlet feeding waters into reservoir without appreciable adverse impact upon natural resources or cultural features within limits surveyed . The construction commenced rapidly resulting in finished project well ahead schedule and cost overruns only narrowly avoided! As completed project became operational high water levels would occasionally cause gates on downstream turbines at power plant entrance to close momentarily reducing electricity produced thereby delaying expected increases demand until gates reopened again future higher water levels causing increased power prices & blackouts
Lakewood was founded in 1876 by settlers from Illinois. The town was named for the large body of water that surrounded it, Lakewood Creek. The first store and post office opened in 1878. In 1912, the city annexed the neighboring towns of Brighton and Park City.
