Lakewood is a city in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 25,711 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 by Elihu Root and named for Lakewood Creek which flows through it. The first shot heard in the town came in 1876 when two men were shooting at a rabbit near the junction of US Routes 8 and 26. In 1912 a law was passed allowing women to purchase rifles and shotguns; this opened up much opportunity for rifle shooting in Lakewood. Shotguns were not legalized until 1978. Rifle shooting has continued to be an important part of community life here since that time with many different events being held each year including skeet, trap, sporting clays, deer hunting (including muzzleloader hunting), and show days.

Lakewood is a city in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 43,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were the Hahns. They arrived in 1869 when they founded Pueblo de la Habana on the east side of Park Creek. They named their community after Havana, Cuba. In 1898, when Colorado became a state, Lakewood became its capital and the seat of government for all Mesa County except Westminster. In 1900 it annexed part of Morrison Township to become its fourth municipality. The population grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s as new housing developments were built along Park Creek and other arterial streets across from downtown Lakewood. A streetcar line running through town was completed in 1929 and became known as "The Loop". During World War II, many residents worked in munitions plants located around Fort Carson north of town or at Douglas Aircraft Plant on Airport Boulevard northeast of town. Many businesses closed during the war but reopened shortly afterwards; some still operate today including KFC (now Sonic Drive-in), Ford dealership, Radio Shack store and numerous small businesses that have continued to thrive since then such as Fourth Street Bicycles and Jiffy Lube garage door openers fame which are still operated today by two families who bought them in 1987 from previous owners who had beenOperating them for over 50 years! On July 1st 1959 voters approved an ordinance providing for incorporation of unincorporated areas within Mesa County into a city limits equal to that established for Aurora by referendum on November 3rd 1956! This action placed Lakewood firmly among America’s cities with a municipal form of government while also affording it limited financial resources necessary to maintain public services

The name of the town comes from two lakes which were nearby: Lakewood Lake and Thornton Lake. Lakewood first developed as a small frontier town during the 18th century. In addition to its location on two large lakes, it had an abundance of forests and prairies that provided plenty of game for settlers and their animals. By the early 19th century, however, the town had shrunk considerably due to heavy German immigration and development in other parts of San Miguel County. In 1892, entrepreneur Jno.[1] Haggerty built a sawmill on Thornton Lake just north of present-day Lakewood City limits. With this new source of revenue, Haggerty began to develop his land into what is nowDISTRICT 3 (the eastern half of San Miguel County) by annexing adjacent parcels from neighboring townships. The annexation process was long and difficult; however, it eventually resulted in the creation of what is now known as DISTRICT 3 as well as many new businesses and residences within it. By 1904, local citizens had voted to rename themselves "Lakewood" after their two important natural resources - Thornton Lakes water supply and beautiful views from atop both lakes - which they hoped would bring more people closer to their growing town. Despite being located only minutes away by buggy or stagecoach throughout much of its history,[2] Lakewood never became very popular with residents due largely to its lack of amenities unavailable elsewhere such as schools or shopping opportunities outside the downtown area.[3] This changed beginning around 1920 when developers started developing larger neighborhoods within walking distance of each other in central business district called "The Villages". These developments brought much needed stability and infrastructure improvements to lesser-known areas like Lakeshore Drive near downtown[4], helping make up for some Lackluster Development at earlier times in the community's life cycle[5][6]. Today's City government was created following incorporation proceedings held on December 1st 2000 via ordinance #9803 under Chapter 921 A Statutes Of Colorado etc., effective January 1st 2001[7]. At that time there were 25,819 residents residing within 8 wards (citywide). On January 1st 2002 all but one ward were annexed into current District 3 with a population increase over 20%. Today District 3 has a population exceeding 30K; making it home to most major employers in our Region including 6 Fortune 500 companies!
