In 1914, Kessler donated land for an arena that would be used for amateur ice hockey and basketball games until it was replaced by the current rink in 1984. In 1923, local resident Harry Weisman developed what would become known as Weisman Field at 720 Cherry Road after buying 100 acres (40 hectares) of forested land north of downtown Lakewood. The field served as home field for both local high school football and baseball teams until it was discontinued due to lack of interest in playing there after World War II left much forested area undeveloped. Until 1973 when it was purchased by CO Hockey Enterprises Inc., Lakewood's only annual professional hockey event took place there annually during late February or early March with all proceeds going back into the community rather than being sent off to team owners overseas each year like many other communities across North America did then oil embargo prohibited this type of activity). It should be noted that while Hockey Enterprises had exclusive rights to play their events here through 1993 they sold out numerous times over succeeding years leading some believe they may have been more involved with ticket sales/marketing than actually playing hockey themselves; however this remains unconfirmed legal documentation still exists verifying this allegation albeit unofficially).
