In the early 1900s, Lakewood was a small town in Colorado Springs that relied largely on agriculture. However, optical equipment and tools were becoming increasingly important to farmers, ranchers, and other rural residents in the area. In 1907, Charles Fenton began selling an innovative optical tool called an opera prism. This tool was designed to split light into its component colors by using two lenses placed at different angles. It became extremely popular and soon replaced traditional lensing techniques for viewing objects. The opera prism helped lead to the development of what are now known as binoculars and eyeglasses. By World War I,Lakewood had become one of the most prosperous communities in Colorado Springs due to its importance as a center for industrial production and research. In 1919, John Aiken developed a new type of spectrograph which allowed scientists to measure the spectral qualities of chemical substances with unprecedented accuracy. This discovery led to significant progress in many fields including physics and chemistry. During World War II, Lakewood became an important manufacturing center for military radar technology due to its location within close range of Colorado Springs Airport. Lakewood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,044 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora–Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1872 by three men from Kansas: John Dickey, Hiram Sibley and George Stephenson. These new telescopes were able to better observe things like galaxies and quasars far beyond our own solar system, which opened up many new possibilities for studying astronomy and space science. Along with this increased capability came greater accuracy and detail which allow usto see features we wouldn't have been able to detect if we only looked at objects close up.

The city became a centre for oil production and the oil industry has been an important part of the city's history ever since. In 1907, Lakewood was incorporated as a municipality and it soon became one of the most powerful cities in Colorado. The city's economic strength comes from itsrole as a large supplier of goods to local businesses as well as its location within easy reach of many major metropolitan areas. Lakewood is also home to several important universities, including Rocky Mountain College and CU-Boulder. The city retains its nickname of "The City on the Plains" due to its location on two high plains – the eastern edge of Denver County and today's boundaries between Parkmoor Township on the east side and Highlands Ranch on the west side – which make for an excellent view from any home or office building in town.
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish traders in 1536. The site of modern-day Lakewood was explored by General George Armstrong Custer in 1876, who named it after his personal home town of Carlsbad, New Mexico. The community began to grow rapidly due to the railroads and mining operations that came along with them. By the early 1920s, Lakewood had become a major resort town surrounded by farms and small towns. In 1933, the city limits were expanded to include present-day Boulder and Broomfield counties.
