Lakewood is a city in Southern Colorado, United States. The population was 31,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pueblo–La Plata Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lakewood is located on the South Platte River and has a total area of 24 square miles (61 km²). The first European to visit what is now Lakewood was Juan de Fuca, who named it La Plata after his home country Argentina. In 1847, General James Hurlbut founded Fort Lyon here with 536 soldiers as part of a push against Mexico across the US border. By 1850, Fort Lyon had grown into one of the largest and most important military posts in Northern Colorado. In 1875, General Philip Sheridan established Camp Hitchcock here to house cavalry reinforcements during the Indian Wars. In 1892, railroad construction began through southern Colorado and ended just north of today's town limits in 1899 when Denver opened its main line down the South Platte River valley from Lyons to Greeley. The townspeople petitioned for their own railway station but were refused because Denver wanted to build an even larger station east of town on land that would be used for agricultural purposes by farmers west of Interstate 25. The townsfolk persuade Denver to change its mind and build them a small railway station on Railroad Street which became their new commercial center until annexation by Aurora in 1916 brought about increased development around it which destroyed much of Railway Street's historic infrastructure including several blocks of century-oldadobe buildings that still stand today as evidence of how local politics can impact community life in south central Colorado

Lakewood is a town in Summit County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Boulder Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lakewood" comes from a post office located in the town that was established in 1892 and renamed for Henry L. Lakewood after his death in 1886. The first settlers to what is now Lakewood were Dutch farmers who arrived there around 1775. They named their land Zandamme because they found a large body of water nearby which they thought resembled a zigzag zebra (a type of horse). In 1892, the United States Post Office moved from its original location on Second Street to what is now Main Street in order to make way for an electric railway line that would run through the town. The naming honors HENRY L. LAKEWOOD, who had died two years earlier while serving as postmaster at South Park Dam on reservoirs near Pueblo. In 1897, when it became clear that coal mines would be developed adjacent to town, Mayor John Fenton ordered all homes within 2 blocks of the mine sites dynamited and burned so that no mining families could live within earshot of their work sites or receive free food or shelter during Shutdown Week (the week preceding school term). This act helped prevent any further settlement within 2 blocks of the mines and helped create one of Colorado's most industrial towns by providing jobs for local residents during hard times
