Lakewood, Colorado is a city in Southern Colorado. The population was 25,819 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Larimer County and straddles the confluence of the South Platte River and Cache Creek. In 1876, it became one of the first U.S. towns to be incorporated as a town on an eastern edge of Denver, after Denver City rejected an ordinance proposed by then-mayor John Evans that would have placed Lakewood within its limits. The name "Lakewood" most likely comes from a Sioux word meaning "a place where we can hunt." The place was also called "Wichita" by some early settlers because Wichita Mountain loomed over it to the south and east; this toponym may be related to another nearby Indian word meaning "place where there are trees." In 1876, when Denver City rejected an ordinance proposed by then-mayor John Evans that would have placed Lakewood within its limits, local businessmen from around town formed a committee to lobby for incorporation into Denver as a town on an eastern edge of downtown – what later became known as Eastern Avenue (now 14th Street). This group succeeded in getting their wish and Lakewood officially became one ofDenver's original municipalities on December 1, 1876. It wasn't until 1899 that Lakewood had its own post office which opened in Summit Hall on Center Street. At that time, all mail delivered through Summit Hall passed through Larimer County instead ofDenver so residents were able to avoid paying taxes to Larimer County while they waited for their mail to come back from Denver depot. In 1911–12, during World War I (the war's first year), Lakewood saw significant industrial activity due in part to General Electric's production plant being located just outside the city limits at Defiance Road and Steele Drive (now 24th Street). That same year saw also saw several new businesses open up within the city Limits: Harrah's Casino & Resort was built adjacent to Summit Hall between 1912 and 1914; A&P Tobacco Company was founded in 1915 on Race Street between 15th Avenue and 17th Avenue; The First National Bank opened up along East Capitol Mall in 1916 across from City Hall; And finally Kress Radio Corporation arrived with its tower atop East Union Hill shortly before World War II began. The 1945 bombing raids did extensive damage both physically and emotionally throughout much of Downtown Denver including but not limited to much Damage done inside courtroom building near 16th & Colfax streets which housed Partisan Review magazine At least four people were killed inside court building when bombs exploded prematurely during air raid sirens sound test run
