Lakewood is a city in Colorado, United States. It was founded in 1856 by wagonload ofigrants from Ohio and Illinois. The population was 8,591 at the 2010 census. The city is located in southern Boulder County and is part of the Denver–Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1856, Lakewood was founded as a town on the east bank of Cherry Creek by wagonloads of immigrants from Ohio and Illinois. The town quickly became known for its agricultural production, especially cotton and corn. By 1870, the population had increased to 25 residents. In 1875, Lakewood annexed what were then rural portions of southeastern Boulder County to its north. That same year, it began annexing land to the south side of Cherry Creek for development into what would become downtown Lakewood today. The first business in downtown Lakewood was an insurance company that opened its doors in 1865. Other early businesses included a dry goods store (1868), a grocery store (1870), an Laundromat (1902), and an auto dealership (1910). A post office called Park City opened in 1872; it lasted until 1911. By 1890, though, Downtown Lakewood had grown into one of Colorado's largest cities with a population over 100 residents. In 1916-17, during World War I, Lakeshore Race Course—now known as Golden Gate Park—was built on land that once housed the old Central School District building adjacent to First Avenue South between Capitol Hill Boulevard and Belleview Boulevard near where Interstate 70 meets Interstate 24 today
