The first settler in what would become Lakewood was John Wesley Powell, who arrived there in 1873 on his exploration journey known as The Great Boulder Canyon Expedition. After years of construction, gristmill and sawmills were erected at the junction of Clearwater Creek and Ute Pass Road leading to Aurora in 1886. By 1890, when Tesla's Electric Light Company began operations here, electric streetcars had reached Lakewood and the community prospered thanks to its location near two major transportation hubs with easy access to both jobs and shopping opportunities. In 1915, when World War I broke out, mining activity returned to Lakewood with soldiers coming home from fighting in Europe bringing over large amounts of gold ore that was then processed into coins and jewelry at nearby Denver Arsenal before being sent back downrange to be melted down and turned into weapons needed by America's war effort. Thanks to its rich cultural heritage dating back centuries – including examples from medieval times onwards – as well as its locations within easy reach of several universities (including CU-Boulder),Lakewood has always been an important center for education within Southern Colorado Springs area.
