The first people to live in what is now Lakewood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near the confluence of the Animas and San Juan Rivers. They built their lodges around two ancient Forks of the Little Colorado River which they named "Beaver Rock" and "Boulder Head". In 1776, George Washington's army passed through this area on its way to Mexico City; General John Becket's command encamped nearby on Beaver Rock opposite where Lakewood now stands. In 1892, a group of men from Fort Collins founded the townsite of Stanleyville on land that had been used for grazing since before Denver was founded. The settlers arrived by wagon train and drove out all but one man from Beaver Rocks village which still stands today as a ghost town. The new settlement began as a single family farm with 14 houses and grew rapidly into a community with over 200 residents by 1900. By 1916, Stanleyville had become an incorporated city with its own government and streets. That same year, Lakewood was founded by Rear Admiral David Sibley as an unincorporated community adjacent to Stanleyville on what is now Roosevelt Boulevard West Side Drive (RDO). At first it consisted only of several homes along Roosevelt Boulevard; however, when Sibley saw how much traffic lakefront areas in Aurora experienced he decided to develop it into an even more active commercial center serving both Aurora and surrounding suburbs including Golden Hills and Thornton Park

The town of Lakewood, Colorado was founded in 1872 by Andrew Jackson Davis. The town rapidly grew and became a commercial center for the region. In the early 20th century, Lakewood became known for its manufacturing properties, such as machine tools and radios.
