As growth continued to occur within Aurora limits, so too did development around Lakewood with businesses such as Bethlehem Steel Company moving into the area during World War II for wartime production needs; Wernher von Braun's V-2 rocket research facility also located nearby; and later developments such as Oneida Shopping Center located just east of I-70 on Utopia Parkway today home to major retailers like Sears Holdings Corporation as well as numerous restaurants, bars and breweries. During this time period many homes were built along Sheridan Boulevard between I-70/Utopia Parkway westward until reaching Northpark Boulevard where homes stopped abruptly about 1985 when I-70 was widened from four lanes down to three with an express lane running concurrently through much of downtown; thereafter all residences became single family detached dwellings known locally as "baths". From this point forward most Interstate 70 traffic entering or leaving Lakeshore Drive turned left onto Sheridan Boulevard becoming known locally as "Highway 70 Loop."
