The last example is the “Trotter Gun Lamp”, which was donated to Lakewood by Mrs. Gladys Ayscough in 1951. In 1902–03, during what is known as "The Great Lakes Scare", lake level changes caused significant flooding that damaged many homes throughout Weld County but also created new opportunities for business development due to increased trade along both Interstate 25 and General Grant Boulevard connecting downtown Denver with outlying farming districts around Weld County
In the mid-19th century, the area that is now Lakewood was part of a remote and rugged land mass known as Rocky Mountains. This region was sparsely populated and farming was the only means of subsistence for many people. The first permanent settler in what is nowLakewood was James A. McKenzie, who arrived in 1859. McKenzie's land belonged to John Dickey, a miner who had married McKenzie's sister. Dickey primitively constructed a cabin on his ranch for himself and his family, which served as the first fixed home in what would becomeLakewood. In 1876, George Hearn purchased three acres from Dickey and began developing it into what is nowthe town of Lakewood. He named his new community after his father-in-law, John A. McGee, an early settler in the area. Hearing about this new development, McGee donated land to Hearn so that he could build a house there. By 1889,McGee had organized a company to purchase supplies needed for building his small township and began construction onwhat would becomethe town hall and jail."
