In 1926, it became one of six communities within Denver metropolitan area; this increased when Aurora added its city limits to encompass all of Park Rapids east of Interstate 70 in 1985 In 1994, the City Council voted to annex portions of Aurora and Thornton due to their combined population exceeding that of Lakewood by 5% (though Aurora had more residents as a result of annexing Thornton). This annexation generated much backlash from residents who felt they had been taken advantage of by their larger neighbor. A ballot initiative failed to gain enough signatures to force annexation again in 2006; however, this didn’t stop ArborView Development Corporation from attempting an annexation campaign in 2012 which lost on election night As reported at "Denver Post" on December 2nd 2018: " Mayor Michael Hancock announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election next year because he doesn't believe he can win against Rocky Mountain News publisher John Hickenlooper."
