Today, Lakewood contains a variety of businesses and services that contribute to its namesake: -The John Fenton Ranch Museum - This museum tells the story of how one man's dream brought about change for all those who lived within sight or reach of him during his time as pioneer farmer and rancher at what is now known as Fenton Park (now part of Walmart). -The Central Colorado Regional Library - built by donation from local businesswoman Gladys Mitchell this library has more than 20 miles of e-reader branches across Douglas County and four dozen computers with internet access. It also offers books, music and art loans for school groups as well as children's programming throughout the summer months. -The Albertsons grocery store - anchored by two large superstores since 1954 this chain has become an anchor around which much local dining takes place including several restaurants serving craft cocktails made with fresh ingredients from their farms or vineyards nearby

Lakewood is a small town in Logan County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. The community was founded on an old military post in 1868 and named for Captain George Washington Lakewood. The post office was first established in 1870 and served as the main center of business for the area until it closed in 1907. In 1916, a new post office was built across the street from the old one and named after Major General John Pershing. Lakewood grew rapidly during World War II due to its position as a major supply depot for munitions manufacturers in southwestern Colorado. The town became known for its production of aircraft engines and other aviation products. In 1948, Lakewood became an incorporated town under state law and began to purchase land from farmers to build homes. In 1969, voters approved a plan to create a city within the town boundaries with a population of 50,000 people by 2000. The city was created but did not gain final approval until 1997 when it passed with 54 percent of the vote over objections from local politicians who argued that having more than one million people living within city limits would be too large an imposition on their villages and townships around the edge of Lakewood proper. The annexation process went slowly because many residents objected to being placed inside what they saw as an urbanized area without any control over their own affairs or development opportunities; however, on July 1, 2003, all villages and townships outside of Lakewood were annexed into City Park by referendum ballot Measure V (the "Annexation Resolution").
Lakewood was founded in 1872 by three brothers, James, George and John, on the west side of the Arkansas River. The brothers named their new town after a small village in Germany that they had visited. The town quickly grew and became an important agricultural center for the eastern plains region. In 1912, Lakewood annexed the adjacent town of Northglenn and renamed itself Lakewood-Northglenn. In 1932, Lakewood became part of Colorado Springs metropolitan area. In 1973, it merged with its neighbor to the south, Pueblo, to become one municipality. As a result of this merger, Lakewood became one of Colorado's most populous municipalities with over 200,000 residents.
