The first post office at Lafayette was established on December 4, 1888, under the name Bellefontaine. On July 10, 1907, it was changed to Placerville from Bellefontaine because of confusion caused by two earlier post offices which were also named Bellefontaine (one on Elm Street near present day North Broadway Avenue)

Lafayette was founded in 1801 by General Lafayette as a trading post on the Arkansas River. In 1819, it became the capital of Colorado. The city was named for General Lafayette and is located near where he fought during the American Revolution.
