Lafayette has been served by the Lafayette School District since 1923. Lafayette started as a ranch and mining community on the east side of Cherry Creek in 1887. In 1917, Lafayette was renamed for General Lafayette who had fought in both World War I and World War II. The community became an agricultural center with dairy cows and hogs being the mainstay of its economy until the early 21st century when oil production began to take hold in nearby Greeley and other surrounding towns. The first post office at Lafayette was established on December 4, 1888, under the name Bellefontaine. On July 10, 1907, it was changed to Placerville from Bellefontaine because of confusion caused by two earlier post offices which were also named Bellefontaine (one on Elm Street near present day North Broadway Avenue)
