During World War II most residents chose to avoid service because they did not see any need for it in their community since there was no danger posed by Axis forces overseas or impending warfare domestically; however some men did complete military service with distinction such as Redmond Welch who served five years as an intelligence officer with Third Army during World War II before dying in action that year while serving with Company K2/2nd Infantry Regiment (3rd Battalion) 9th Infantry Division near Anzio Italy

In 1940, Lafayette became an incorporated municipality with a population of 2,000 people; it increased to 3,500 by 1990 thanks to annexation of adjacent townships along with Aspen and Grand Junction
Lafayette was founded by Pierre Charles L'Enfant and named in honor of General Lafayette, who fought in the American Revolution. The city is home to the University of Colorado at Boulder, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States.
