Gun Parts History in Lafayette, Colorado began with the first firearms being made here in 1876. The town of Lafayette was founded by John C. Fremont and his partners, who were looking to start a new settlement on the top of a hill overlooking the Arkansas River. The site they chose for their new town was on the east side of what is now Cherry Hills Village, just west of Interstate 25 and north of I-25 Business Loop. The first gun that was made in Lafayette was an 8-shot revolver called the “Fremont Rifle”. It had an eight-inch barrel and was designed to be used as a hunting platform. It wasn’t until 1883 that guns started to be manufactured in larger numbers here at this location and soon after, rifles as well. In 1907, there were three companies manufacturing pistols here: Colt Armory, Smith & Wesson Firearms Company, and Montgomery Arms Corporation. All three companies produced revolvers (except Colt), shotguns, rifles, pistols, ammunition boxes and other firearm parts from this location between 1907-1914. In 1944, when World War II began., production stopped at all four companies because of military necessity due to wartime restrictions on arms production overseas. However, North American Ammunition company continued operations until 1949 using two different plants in Niagara Falls and Hamilton Ontario after having been acquired by Remington Arms Company earlier that year
