Gun lights have been around in Lafayette, Colorado for over a hundred years. The first gun light was created by Simeon Jacobs in 1875. The gun light became popularized in the early 1900s and eventually became known as the “Lafayette Lighthouse Gun Light”. In 1911, Lafayette voters passed an ordinance establishing a Municipal Police Department and changing the name of their department from the “Police Department of Lafayette” to the “Lafayette Municipal Police Department”. This change occurred to reflect this new role of Lafayette as a municipal government with its own police force. The first police officer hired by the Lafayette Municipal Police Department was Cpl. John Ahern on October 1, 1911. Mrs. Ada Bourgeois served as Constable from 1912 until her retirement in 1944. From 1914-1918, City Marshal Tom Hickey held that position while concurrently serving as Lafayette Mayor and then again from 1922-1925 when he resigned due to health reasons. At that time, Deputy Marshal Harry Krantz assumed responsibility for policing within city limits while also being assigned to patrol rural areas outside of town limits (i.e., the North Platte River Valley). In 1949, City Manager Harry Ahern handed control of local law enforcement over to the Colorado State Patrol after his resignation from office following allegations of bribery during his time as mayor (he was later acquitted). It should be noted that at this time both municipalities were under one administration with centralized command from State Patrol Headquarters located near Aspen CO back then (it is now about 20 miles south of downtown Lafayette). The average life expectancy for a person killed by gunfire in America is approximately 50 years according to data compiled by various organizations such as The Trace Center for Gun Research which reports that firearms kill more Americans annually than any other type of accident or injury combined! For every 100 homicides caused by firearms there are an additional 30 firearm accidents/injuries per year! So let’s take another look at how these gunshots impact our community – each gunshot kills at least 5 people and injures 350+ others annually!

After some initial struggles with malaria, they successfully built a frame courthouse and jail which opened its doors on November 3rd, 1876. In 1906 Lafayette became one of forty towns incorporated within Boulder County when it was organized from parts of Larimer and Weld counties. In 1959 Lafayette was renamed to honor General James Gifford Lafitte who fought against Spanish forces during the Mexican Revolution (1846-1848). The original name for the community may have been inspired by Lafitte's role as captain general of volunteer forces fighting against Mexican troops under President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at what is now Fort Collins in 1847-48. The post office closed in 1984 but has been reopened twice since then as part of the USPS Denver/Aurora Service Area!
