Lafayette was one of fourteen towns in Arapaho County when it was created from parts of Clear Creek County on November 3, 1892. The first post office in Lafayette was established at mile marker 16 on January 1, 1893. In 1896, Lafayette became the site of what is now the first state fairgrounds in Colorado. That year also saw the opening of its first schoolhouse and courthouse. In 1903, Lafayette's first library opened with $5 000 donated by local merchants. The years following World War I saw an increase in population as soldiers returned home from fighting abroad; this led to a rise in businesses and development in downtown Lafayette including construction of a new high school (1921), grocery store (1927), post office (1929), movie theater (1930-31), tennis courts (1934-35), and several churches ( 1926-27). In 1931, Interstate 25 was built through central Lafayette connecting Denver with Oklahoma City; as a result, business activity diminished considerably within downtown except for services such as banking which continued until about 1975 when AT&T erected a telecommunications tower next door which caused some retail closure however most businesses have since reopened either inside or adjacent to their original location unchanged by technology!
