Lafayette is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 2,507 at the 2010 census. Lafayette is named for General Lafayette, who fought in the American Revolution and served as an aide to George Washington. The community was founded in 1898 by farmers who were displaced by the creation of the Denver-Aurora Railroad. In 1940, Lafayette became a ghost town when most of the residents moved away to other towns in Weld County. But because of its small size and rich history, Lafayette has been continuously inhabited since that time. Lafayette first grew up around a sawmill on the riverbank. Over time, several other businesses followed suit and produced lumber and hardware products for local residents and travelers alike. By 1912, Lafayette had a post office, school (grades one through eight), church (Congregational), store (Bible & gift shop), bathhouse (1898), blacksmith shop (1902), wagon wheel factory (1910) and agricultural tools dealership. In 1938, after years of planning by local officials and citizens alike, construction began on what would become known as "The Drive". This road connected Lafayette with nearby Aurora for both transportation and commerce. It served as an important artery for traffic throughout much of Weld County until it was paved over in 1950s development initiatives spearheaded by county commissioners John Bidwill and Clifford Olson respectively – projects that continue to this day as part of downtown Aurora's arterial progressivism narrative[1]. During World War II, many families from neighboring towns came together to support the war effort through work at local businesses such as mine fields or farm production[2]. After hostilities ended in 1945, many veteran families continued to live in Jefferson City or elsewhere within Weld County while their children finished high school[3]. Many locals remember those postwar years fondly – some even still refer to themselves as "the wartime generation".[4] Eager to start anew after decades of economic stagnation following World War II,[5], many developers resurrected old growth cotton plantations near Aurora during this period[6]. However due to environmental concerns brought about by these practices,[7], these plantations have generally been replaced by more sustainable practices over time[8]. For much of this era,[9], however, there was also little movement into rural areas outside of larger cities like Denver or Aurora; instead manufacturers largely aimed their business activities towards large metropolitan centers like Denver or Greeley [10]. This changed beginning in the late 1990s with increased interest within rural communities across Colorado"[11],[12] driven both by new technologies like open source software development kits (OSDKs)[13],[14] which allow remote innovation BYODcelerators― people working from home―and increasing awareness among policymakers about rural poverty issues inherent within wide swathes of our state's interiorlands[[15],[16]). As such there has been an increase not only in entrepreneurship opportunities but also investment dollars into rural ecosystems regionally; something that has circled back around again with renewed impetus given current policy priorities surrounding key infrastructure investments statewide including broadband deployment plansFootnote 1
