When they reached Cherry Creek Village in central Greenwood on July 25th they found that it had been abandoned because its inhabitants had fled before nightfall after learning about an upcoming gold rush near Telluride.* The Mormons built their first chapel here on October 12th of that year*. The following year (1876), Starting with just $2 worth of gold discovered at Pikes Peak*, James Fenton organized an expedition led by David McKay into southwestern Aurora where they mined over $10 thousand worth of gold while exploring several claims.* On November 3rd 1865*, Indian Agent J.B Priesthood received notification from Fort Laramie that 4 Mexicans who had recently crossed the US-Mexico border were hiding among the Plains Indians near Big Horn Pass* They were soon arrested and returned to Mexico*On December 2nd 1865*, Averill Morrison died suddenly from heart failure at age 54 years old while out prospecting in southwest Aurora with his son James Fenton Jr.. At his death he left behind wife Agnes Murdoch Morrison (née Williamson) and 5 children: James H., Averill C., Angus T., Marlene G., Donald W.-Jared W.-Donald R.. In 1884 Mother Murdoch married Reverend George Stephenson (1851-1942). By 1890 there were 208 residents living in Greenwood; all but 8 being blacksmiths or wagonmakers employed by local mines during early days when transportation was crudely provided by Indian runners transporting goods across country via wagons pulled over prairies * * After Mother Murdoch's death her husband took control of family businesses which continue until present day including: Morrisons Millinery store which has operated continuously since 1870; Blacksmith shop; Methodist Episcopal Church building erected between 1889-91; First Presbyterian Church constructed 1901-02 schoolhouse northeast corner Union Ave./ north side Main St.; homebuilt gas station installed 1907
