Greenwood was first settled in 1876 and the first gunsmith in Greenwood was post office keeper John A. Tilton. The town of Greenwood began to grow after incorporation in 1903 when it became a city. The population grew rapidly due to the lumber industry and the opening of Interstate 25 in 1925 which made Greenwood an easy commute to Denver. In 1924, Greenwood annexed the neighboring town of Lafayette and their combined population reached 10,000 by 1930. Manufacturing companies such as Colt, Winchester, Remington, Steyr-Daimler-Puch were established in Greenwood due to its proximity to the resources needed for manufacturing. The Great Depression halted growth and By 1941, Greenwood had only 5 businesses remaining from its pre-depression peak of 20 businesses. However, with federal funding available during World War II for infrastructure projects throughout Colorado, Greenwood experienced rapid growth again due to stimulus spending that created many new jobs in industries such as aerospace equipment manufacture and engineering services. With limited space within the city limits for future development, some entrepreneurs decided to build new neighborhoods outside of the city limits which Today is known as "The Green Mile".
