The Greenwood Village community in Colorado Springs was first developed in the early 1920s as a result of the search for a new home for the United States Military Academy. The area that now makes up Greenwood Village was originally known as Royal Oak, after a small town in Ontario, Canada. In 1925, the United States Army Corps of Engineers began construction on what is now known as Fort Carson National Monument and Analysis Laboratory. The monument was dedicated on October 15th, 1925 by General James Fenton with representatives from many countries attending. In 1929, American Optical Company (AOC) opened its doors within the national monument to begin manufacturing optical equipment for military and government use. AOC remained in business untilsoldiers were discharged from service in 1960. During World War II, AOC produced more than 1 million pieces of optic equipment including binoculars, telescopes, and film cameras; however, most of their production ceased during the war due to shortages brought about by wartime restrictions on materials. Greenwood Village began to take shape around AOC’s facilities beginning in the late 1940s when businesses such as Anheuser-Busch salesmen began bringing German tourists to see how American companies had designed products specifically adapted to their needs during World War II. By 1951 local residents had formed their own Municipal Land Use Committee (MLUC) which worked towards establishing zoning regulations that would allow development within an environmentally sensitive area adjacent to Fort Carson National Monument. In 1957 MLUC approved plans for a shopping center called “The Commons” which would include apartments and office space along with roads leading directly into it from residences bordering Fort Carson National Monument. At this time much of Greenwood Village was still rural with few streets having any sort of name other than “Ridge Road” or “Highway 8” which led down into neighboring communitiesite Rosedale and Golden Valley respectively). One suspects that at least some residents who disapproved of plans for The Commons may have been motivated by fears that such development would encourage motorists passing through our quiet residential neighborhoods to speed up rather than slow down when they reached The Commons property line! On November 5th, 1969 President Richard Nixon signed Executive Order 13422 which created Historic Preservation Division within Department of Interior (DOI). This order instructed DOI staff responsible for managing federal properties throughout America to review all existing lists of endangered historic sites and make recommendations regarding whether any particular site should be added to this list based upon its historical significance or architectural features alonerather than its current location within an unprotected environment! After nearly 20 years without action being taken against The Commons development project it finally came under attack in 1978 when developers purchased property next doorto complete what has come to be known asthe Crossroads Mall; this mall currently contains over 300 stores including Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears), JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Wet Seal Inc.,Apple ComputerInc., FedEx Field LLC,[1]TJ Maxx Sporting Goods Inc,[2][3]Crossroad Mall LP[4],and several fast food restaurants.[5] Shortly after these developments initial protests against Crossroad Mall seemed like they might swerve closer towards organized opposition but instead they quickly dissipated once similar projects nearby were announced without incident; something that seems particularly curious given that DoI staff are apparently not exactly well-versed in mall design! Some suspect that perhaps some people living closeby simply do not want larger retailers near them?* Although these suspicions may seem unfounded at first glance there is no doubt that large retail projects can impact negatively certain groupsof people both positively & negatively depending on their perspective * It is also worth noting that although crossroad mall opponents technically residewithin scopeof DOI authority all indications point towards them wantingonlyto stop those projects ratherthan improve accessfor shoppers&owners* In short: whatever your feelings about crossroad mall - don't forget about GreenwoodVillage ;)

This stimulated growth of Greenwood as a railroad stop on the rail line. By 1918, Greenwood had a sawmill and three churches; one Congregationalist and two Roman Catholic parishes served within its limits at that time. During World War II, many men from Greenwood enlisted in the military because of wartime needs such as food supplies and transportation distances involved with combat troops stationed overseas. Many residents also worked construction jobs on local roads or railways during this time period The decline of agriculture starting in the early 21st century led to smaller towns becoming more popular with tourists throughout Douglas County throughout recent years due to attractions such as mountain biking trails available near town center locations such as Monument Valley National Park
