Greenwood, Colorado is a town in Greenwood County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver–Aurora metropolitan area. Greenwood is named after Colonel John A. Greenwood and his family who settled there in 1879. The town was founded by farmers on a farmstead that still stands today adjacent to US-6 north of downtown Greenwood. The first post office opened in 1881 and it remained open until 1957 when it closed due to low mail volume. The first gunfight in Greenwood took place on October 12, 1886 when two men were shot at point-blank range while walking near what is now known as the old First Baptist Church. At this time guns were not commonly used in outdoor activities but were more common for hunting and sporting purposes only. As gun violence increased throughout the late 19th century (due largely to legislation pushing for stricter gun control), so did crime rates in Greenwood which led to a move by many residents to leave the community during the early 20th century as Crime Rates began to decline overall in America during this time period In 1960, residents of Greenwood voted overwhelmingly for incorporation into Aurora as a city under their own governance with voting rights reserved for citizens of Aurora only

In 1875, Greenwood became an independent village when its residents voted to secede from El Paso County. They were later annexed by Aurora. The community's nickname comes from the fact that it once had a green lawn which led people to call it "Greensburg." The grassy fields have since been replaced with trees and shrubs due to lack of maintenance or interest in the area by local residents over time. Today, Greenwood remains a sleepy little town with just a few dozen homes and businesses near Interstate 25 and Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard east of downtown Denver. Greenwood is a small town located in Clear Creek County, Colorado. The population was 1,543 at the 2000 census. Greenwood is one of the oldest settlements in Colorado and was established on April 14, 1876 when settlers from nearby Englewood arrived to build a log cabin. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad in 1880 and became an important stop on the rail line. The first business in Greenwood was a mill which operated until 1885. After that time, many businesses were opened including a bakery, grocery store, post office, hotel and school. In 1907, Greenwood had its own railroad station which served as both a depot for the local train service and also played host to various events such as carnivals and fairs. In the early days of Greenwood's growth there were few homes other than log cabins which were quickly replaced with more permanent structures during the late 1800s when larger blocks of land were available for development. One of these structures is currently occupied by Greenwood High School which was built in 1909-10 following plans submitted by then-Mayor John Aiken. The original high school building design by architect Edward Calkins features Romanesque Revival style architecture with Arts and Crafts elements throughout.
