Greenwood is a small town in Rocky Ford County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is one of the oldest communities in the county and has been around since 1872. The first settlers to Greenwood were farmers who arrived from Illinois in 1851. The town was founded on December 12, 1872 by James W. Greenwood and his wife Eliza A. Woodruff. It was named after a nearby mountain, Greenwood Peak. In its early years, Greenwood had no public schools and residents attended local academies or churches for instruction. By 1906, when Greenwood had a high school and two stores, it became the first community in Rocky Ford County to be granted general education status by the state legislature. The post office at Greenwood opened on November 15, 1886; it remained open until it was discontinued in 1914. In 1907–08, J P Richardson built the original town hall which still stands today as a part of downtown Greenwoolle Shopping Center complex northwest of Main Street (now Interstate 25). At that time Greenwoolle consisted of just four homes: Richardson's house (later changed name to First Presbyterian Church), Hammonds', Applewhite's', and Weiser's'. The main street through town center today was laid out as an alignment of Prospect Avenue east-west with Second Avenue north-south; this alignment remains largely unchanged today except for minor variances due to various storms over the years that have struck neighboring towns such as Aspen and Golden Age during their respective growth spurts (eclipsing or disrupting growth at Greenwood). One reason why Greenwood enjoyed relatively short-lived prosperity during its earliest days is likely because there were few opportunities for citizens to engage in commerce outside of buying goods needed for their own individual needs or selling products they made themselves from materials they obtained locally orources such as coal mined near their homes or lumber purchased from surrounding counties/townships/cities without having to go too far away - something that wasn't possible until much later when transportation improved greatly and people could easily purchase items like cars etc., bringing more commercial activity into smaller towns like Greenwoolle which then began benefiting economically from increased tourism along with other new businesses popping up throughout larger cities/counties becoming increasingly accessible due to advances technology/commerce - all while keeping intact many of the community’s cultural features unique to that era including traditional homebuilt architecture combined with elders being able to continue teaching important skills essential for living life fully within society even once gone beyond some basic level those skills may now only be passed down orally instead if taught professionally In 1910 USGS maps show that there were already three schools located within 1 mile radius of present day downtown core: First Presbyterian School (later renamed Park Elementary School), Homeopathic Hospital School #1 & 2 & Third Baptist Church School #2 also known as Woodward Academy which served grades K-12 until 1978 when both buildings were taken down& replaced by current I-25 High school building
