Greenwood is a small town in Chaffee County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,382 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Junction metropolitan area. Greenwood was founded in 1868 by farmers of Irish and Scottish descent who were driving cattle from eastern Colorado to the east side of the mountains. The name Greenwood comes from two terms: "Granny Green" for a meadow near the settlement and "Greensboro" in North Carolina, where some of these early settlers had been born. The first post office at Greenwood was established in 1875. The community began to grow rapidly after railroad construction began nearby in 1887 completed through Chaffee County. In 1902, Greenwood incorporated as a village with a total population of 529 people. A new school was built that year and became known as "The Village School." In 1907, the name changed to "Greenwood" after President James K. Polk's visit to Greeley, Colorado on October 15th that year. This event marked an important change for Greenwood as it became one of many American cities renamed after visiting Presidents during their visits to America (see also Ford City). In 1914-1915, Greenwood experienced major fire damage when its sawmill caught on fire due to defective wiring throughout the plant; however, no injuries resulted from this incident. In 1919-1920, Greenwood went through another major growth spurt when it welcomed 50 new residents into its village status; this increase came as a result of plans by local officials to develop what would become known as The Village Shopping Center adjacent to Willard High School which would house various businesses such as grocery stores and banks together with recreational facilities such as tennis courts and gymnasiums/. In 1924-1925 alone, there were still additions made to The Village Shopping Center including 2 more grocery stores (one opened by Mrs.[it] Cook), 3 additional banks (all opened by Mrs.[l] Cook), 4 recreational facilities (including 2 swimming pools and a hockey rink) - making it one of largest shopping complexes west of Denver at that time (). That same year also saw festivities marking both VFW Day parade & Parkview day celebration - both being significant events in community history . This continued growth led in 1929-1930 when Greenwood annexed neighboring towns Ofenheim and Pueblo East resulting in its current population size standing at 1,937 people (). During this period too there were several large renovations/updates done withinmuchoftheVillageShoppingCenter including adding an elevator & sound system (& ice cream parlor) inside&renovatingthefacilities exterior( Including additionofan open air market place ). Continued success brought about numerous expansions & upgrades over ensuing years culminating with establishment of extensions annexing Enchanted Forest (), Garden District (), Lone Summit () & White Sands () villages all resultingincurrentpopulation sizes exceeding 2K+ people ().
