Greenwood, Colorado is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greeley–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greenwood was founded in 1876 by James A. Greenwood and his wife Eliza Jane Woodruff as a small railroad depot on the southern edge of what would become Aurora Township. In 1912, Greenwood became an incorporated municipality with a population of 514. The first post office in Greenwood was established in 1876, and remained open until it closed in 1903. The current post office was established on December 12, 1912, and has been operational since then. The town's name comes from James A. Greenwood's purchase of land adjacent to the present-day town limits on November 3rd, 1876 for $1 per acre (approximately $27 at that time). The original plat for the proposed town included only a single block of land measuring just over two blocks long and one block wide - which would later be renamed "Greenwood" after Mr. Greenwood's death in 1865. The town grew slowly until it reached its peak during World War I when it had a population of 1,500 people; however, this number decreased rapidly after the war ended due to natural growth rates within Weld County%. Afterward, Greenwood experienced significant growth through residential development along State Highway 36 once again outpacing Weld County's overall rate of growth rate; however this trend reversed following the passage of Amendment 204 to the Colorado Constitution which granted voting rights to women starting with municipal elections held on November 4th,. In recent years there have been concerted efforts by local developers to reverse this trend by creating new housing opportunities near retail corridors located near Interstate 25 and State Highway 36 as well as developing new parks within walking distance or minutes' drive of many residents' homes.. Today much like when it first arrived in 76', Greenwood has made strides both professionally & politically while maintaining its sense of community connectedness thru arts programs & events!
