Greenwood was founded in 1892 by citizens of Aspen, Colorado as a citrus orchard and dairy farm. In 1907, Greenwood became an independent city when it merged with Aspen. The city prospered under its own charter until voters approved annexation by Denver in 1912. The growth of Greenwood coincided with the development of the Rocky Mountain region during the late 19th century. gold discoveries in 1859 and 1860 led to increased traffic and wealth in nearby Larimer County; this influx helped stimulate industry and commerce throughout western Colorado. In addition, wealthy investors purchased land near Aspen for tha purpose of transporting crops to eastern markets while establishing ranching operations that yielded champion livestock including steers, horses, and mules. By 1870, Aspen had become one of southern Denver's most populous neighborhoods while Greenwood boasted only a dozen residents. A significant change took place in 1886 when J P Richardson opened his first store on Third Street downtown; Richardson quickly became an important factor in early Greenwood'scommercial development. Businesses grew rapidly due to his innovative marketing techniques which focused on creating demand through advertising campaigns that featured local products prominently along with descriptions tailored to local interests such as fishing and hunting opportunities within easy reach from home. He also established relationships with prominent business leaders throughoutDenver-including Mayor John Hickenlooper-and sponsored civic events such as annual fairs and street car rides throughouttown which drew attention to their accomplishments within their community. In 1915 A&P grocery store (later renamed PepsiCo) opened its doors adjacent to the post office; thisesteemed landmark helped promote retail shopping activities within downtown Greenwood despite competition from moreestablished stores across town which enjoyed preferential zoning ordinances privileging their presence proximateto public transportation options.. Greenwood was founded in 1872 by John Greenwood and his wife, Sarah. The Greenwood family were pioneers in the Colorado Rockies andowned several businesses including a general store, bakery, lumberyard, post office and hotel. In 1916, the Greenwood family sold their business to the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad. The first train to travel through Greenwood arrived on July 7, 1872 from Denver. The railroad built a depot at what is now known as Ninth Avenue and Halsey Street in downtown Greenwood. The station was used until 1912 when it burned down. In 1916, the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad merged with the Western Union Railway to form the Kansas City Southern Railway (KCS). KCS laid track through downtown Greenwood between Sixth Avenue and Seventh Street in 1924. As part of this merger, KCS took over ownership of the oldDenver & Rio Grande Railroad Depot at Ninth Avenue and Halsey Street for use as their new Headquarters building.
