Greenwood is a small town in Douglas County, Colorado. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is on the western edge of the county and is bordered by Aspen to the north, Canon City to the east, Golden to the south, and some rural land to the west. The zip code 80301 has a population of 9,554 as of 2019. Greenwood was founded in 1872 by John Greenwood as a trading post on Islet Creek. In 1892 it became an incorporated town after being named for Greenwood's home state of Arkansas. It became an unincorporated community in 1951. The townsite that now forms Greenwood was first settled by Native Americans in what is now Douglas County about 12 miles (19 km) east of where Aspen now stands. They hunted game and gathered plants and nuts which they trade with local farmers for goods such as clothing and housing. By 1800 there were over 100 Indian settlements in this area including Atchison, Topeka, Ottawa (now Wichita),and Green River Junction established before US forces burned them all during their Indian Wars against Mexico from 1846-1848
The first modern firearms were designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. He designed a design for a rifle called the fusil de l’école, which used a revolving barrel and stock. The weapon was successful and became known as the musket. The fusil de l’école replaced the arquebus as the primary firearm of infantry in most armies by 1800. However, it was not adopted into all armies until 1814 when the French army changed its guns to match that of their British allies. By this time, rifles were becoming more advanced and had become more difficult to use safely with one hand due to their increasing firepower. In 1847, Johann Friedrich Raff, an Austrian gunsmith working on muzzle loading firearms developed a new type of rifle called the Kugelballett or “corpse ball” which utilized a concave projectile that passed through a metal chamber and explosive device at the back end before exploding killing both targets
The first gun lights were developed in 1855 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. They were a combination of a candle and an oil lamp, which allowed the user to see in darkness. The first true gun lights were created during World War I when American soldiers used them to signal their positions in darkness.
Greenwood, Colorado was founded by the Butterfield Party in 1876. The party arrived on horseback from Pueblo to explore the new territory acquired by Colorado in the Mexican-American War. The party’s leader, John Wesley Butterfield, named the town Greenwood after his home country of England. The party’s first store and post office were located at what is now 9th and Lincoln Streets. In 1877, the United States Post Office moved to the present location on 8th Street. The town grew rapidly and by 1880 had a population of over 1,000 people. Greenwood became a stop on stagecoach routes between Denver and Cheyenne. It also developed as a center for local agriculture with many large mills and farms dotting its landscape. In 1915, Greenwood was placed within Denver city limits as part of an effort to increase its population density within boundaries that would allow for more efficient government operations. growth continued throughout World War II until 1945 when the war ended and Greenwood lost its status as an important agricultural center due to declines in production caused by wartime military activity across much of Colorado Springs area
Greenwood was founded in 1872 by David Greenwood and his father, John Greenwood. The town is named for the green forest that surrounds it. The first post office was established in 1875, and the first store opened in 1877. Greenwood has a population of around 2,500 people today.
