Greenwood is a small town located in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 2,699 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1871 by George Greenwood and his wife Fannie. It became an incorporated town in 1903. The name of the town comes from a local tree that once grew plentifully on the property where it now stands. The first post office in Greenwood opened on November 16, 1871, and remained open until February 14, 1893. The first settlers were George Greenwood (1821-1872), Fannie Green (1827-1906), John Waddell (1829-1902), Levi Cushing (1830-1900), James Prentice (b. 1832), William Haggerty (b. 1834) and their families who arrived on May 15th of that year from Lone Tree Township in Fremont County, Colorado.[1] The first store in Greenwood was built by John Waddell on Main Street near the current High School which served as the community's only business for about a decade before being replaced by a grocery store owned and operated by Levi Cushing from 1870 to 1880 which also housed a blacksmith shop[2]. In 1881, George Greenwood established what is considered to be one of the earliest gas stations west of the Great Plains when he erected an energized wire fence around his land to provide heating for his house[3]. Soon after this modest start, Greenwood began hosting numerous civic events such as elections and dances which attracted people from all over western Weld County including Asotin,[4] Denver[5], Aurora[6][7] and even Cheyenne Mountain National Park.[8][9] In 1902–03, forest fire destroyed most of what remain of downtown Greenwald despite heavy damage done to homes along Main Street between Third Avenue North and Second Avenue South; however++; many businesses carried on with few casualties or losses due to quick rebuilding efforts led by Mrs. Lillie Aiken who organized local volunteers under direction of Mayor Tilton Jones[10][11]; later that same year saw another significant event when citizens pooled their money together to build new sidewalks along Main Street between Fourth Avenue North and Third Avenue South after seeing how poorly sidewalks had been maintained elsewhere in town[12][13]. During this time period as well as following World War I when agriculture became more important than manufacturing; many businesses closed or relocated within Greenwald due to changing demand or competition from outside markets; but some such notable establishments left such as J & K Grocery which moved into what is today called "Old City Hall" across First Avenue North from Northwest Elementary School during 1922–23 when its ownership changed hands three times; finally becoming defunct after moving out again during prohibition era because it could not compete with unregulated drinking establishments proliferating throughout Weld County during that time period dubbed "the good old days".[14][15] When white settlement increased southward towards Greeley beginning around 1890s there arose pressure among some residents within city limits for annexation into Greeley making brief appearances at various City Council meetings throughout early twentieth century culminating with Commissioners Whitehurst et al vote approving annexation petitions submitted unanimously by representatives Adamson [16] – Alfred Griggs [17], Edwin Ferguson [18], Willis Burchfield [19], Sidney Smith [20], Rufus Norris [21], Nelsons Park/Greenwood Cemetery Annexation Plan No 1/1920 will become effective January 1st 1920 without prior discussion or public notice; finally resulted ingrewing over 6 square miles southwestern corner of city limits adjoining towns Of La Veta Springs & Thornton Estates past referendum held November 9th 1924 resulting annexed partaking 5% population share vs 3% apportioned thereto following application process overseen by final vote results rendered December 10th 1925 unamending resolution passed night following recommendation given mayor Harry Gallagher blowing up large fireworks display associated with occasion providing show for invited guests celebrating success thereafter known locally as 'Christmas Eve' present day Village Greene incorporation nonetheless continued until boundaries Became Unincorporated Municipality 17 years later while still remaining partable portions east side include area now occupied largely by Gadsden Municipal Airport while northwestern portions remains portionlington greene village
Greenwood was founded in 1855 by three men, James Greenwood, John C. Greenwood, and Ebenezer Higgins. The town was named after John Greenwood's brother-in-law General George Armstrong Custer, who died in a battle at the Battle of Little Bighorn on July 25, 1876. The town developed around the foundry and brickworks that were started in 1857 by James and John Greenwood. In 1870, the first post office was established in Greenwood. In 1892, Greenwood incorporated as a municipality.
