Greenwood is a small town in Weld County, Colorado, United States. The population was 3,522 at the 2010 census. Greenwood was founded in 1876 by John Greenwood and his wife Anna. It was named for Greenwood Forest, which lay to the south of the town. In 1870–71, J. Dickson Green discovered coal in what is now Greenwood Township and offered it for sale to local residents. By 1880, Greenwood had a post office, three stores and a school. In 1887, the first railroad pass through Greenwood reached fruition when the Arapaho Express ran from Denver to Cheyenne via Greenwood. Greenwood experienced some growth during World War I; its population increased from 100 to 1,000 between 1914 and 1918 as soldiers served on both sides of the conflict. However, by 1920 there were only 209 residents remaining in Greenwaldtownsend after most of the city's buildings had been destroyed or burned down in a fire that year. The townsite reverted back to private hands following World War II but reopened as part of an effort to preserve downtown Greeley's history during postwar redevelopment. The current incarnation of Greenwood began taking shape in earnest after 1990 when developers purchased all of downtown Greeley's vacant lots and began construction on what would become one of Colorado's largest indoor amusement arcades – The Fairgrounds at First Street & Mesa Avenue – later renamed Park Plaza USA II after its acquisition by Gannett Incorporated (the parent company of The Kansas City Star). This development led directly to downtown Greeley becoming one of America’s most vibrant urban cores with high-quality retail shops and restaurants opening up along First Street throughout much of 2001 until 2003 when they vacated due to rising property values associated with Downtown Park Plaza USA II.).
