Greenwood is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, United States. The population was 705 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is named after General John Greenwood, an officer in the Union army during the American Civil War who also served as a U.S. Representative from Colorado. The first people to live in what is now Greenwood were Native Americans who hunted and gathered game near present-day Aspen and Arapaho Reservoirs. In 1876, prospectors discovered coal near what is now Greenwood Village, making it possible for settlers to establish homes thereabouts. The town grew slowly until its incorporation as a municipality on December 1, 1912. In 1924, development started on the townsite that would become Greenwood Village; this included construction of a grain elevator and other businesses necessary for proper growth before 1920s standards were established for village size and infrastructure requirements. A post office was established at Greenwood on October 16, 1907; it closed on December 15, 1925 due to low mail volume caused by increasing popularity of Denver as the capital of Colorado. 1st Ward Mayor Edwin Witherspoon offered to open up his ward's polling place 1 block east of Main Street so citizens could vote more easily during World War I because he felt military service had taken away many residents' right to vote outside their home state or country – but no action was ever taken! On November 8th 1916 issue of "The Gazette" newspaper (now defunct) two residents - Mrs Rundle and Mr Cook - presented petitions asking city council not to allow any new buildings within 500 feet (150 meters) of existing residences without prior consent from all property owners – effectively prohibiting future growth that may impact their own homes! Despite overwhelming opposition from most property holders living within 600 feet (200 meters) or less of proposed developments including some very eminent members such as Mrs Rundle herself - Council voted 5-2 in favor of developing into what would eventually become known as "Greenwood Village". This essentially created zoning regulations which still apply today with few exceptions in areas such as commercial districts where special permits are required for certain types of development like high-density housing or accessory uses like restaurants/bars/liquor stores etc.. Greenwood was founded in 1871 as a small farming community by pioneer families.
