Greenwood is a small town in Garfield County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Greenwood is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood metropolitan area. Greenwood is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and is surrounded by mountains to its east and west. The town was founded in 1876 as a mining town named Greeneville after General George A. Custer, who had been killed two years earlier in an Indian battle near present-day Gilpin County. Greenwood's first post office opened in 1877. The townsite that now makes up Greenwood was first patented on July 26, 1876 by John Dallesandro from what is now Telluride County,Colorado Territory. David White assigned land to Joseph Linnich for $100 per acre (equivalent to $5,700 at current prices). On December 12th of that year Linnich sold his share to James Saucier for $2,000 and started making claims for his own land which eventually would make up the center of today's Greenwood community. In 1879 when gold were discovered nearby (and later renamed Williams Lake), many prospectors came to Greeneville looking for it but no one found any gold until Harry Wolkentin set up shop there with a team of horses in 1880/81 while working claim #1 on what is now Broadway street just north of Interstate 25/Upper I-25 junction (). Eventually over 100 prospectors mined here during those days including some who built hotels such as the Prospector's Inn at Broadway and Eastern Avenue (). In 1886 Jens Jensen bought 3% interest in Wolkentin's operation from Harry Wolkentin and continued operations under his name until 1893 when he sold all his interests back to Harry Wolkentin Jr.. On January 2nd 1890 William Welch took over management from Jens Jensen . He ran it into the ground by 1902 when he sold out too leaving only 14 men employed () This left muchofthetowndefeatedbypricecutsandbankruptcy() That year also saw another big development when Colorado Boulevard (now called I-25) was extended south across Woodward Creek () creating an even closer connection between downtown Denver and Greenwood! It wasn't long before people realized they couldn't do everything they wanted because their jobs would go away if business ever dried up again so they decidedtosettledownnearthe creekwhichmadeforbetterwaterationlevels() Andin 1907 they built their first schoolhouse () followed by several more until finallyIn 1934 Greeneville became an official city! Today most residents still live close to each other either within or outside of Aurora with restaurants and shopping available right outside your door! Some historic buildings like The Prospector’s Inn have been renovated into other uses but most are still standing testament to how active Greenwood once was!

The name Greenwood comes from the nearby Greenwood Forest, which is said to have been the first forested area in the Rocky Mountains. The population of Greenwood reached 3,000 by 1880 and soon became an important regional center for lumber and other businesses. The community experienced some growth during World War II as many local soldiers were drafted to fight in Europe. In the postwar years, Greenwood underwent a gradual decline as its economy shifted toward more rural surroundings. However, recent development has brought increased attention to the town and its history. The first settlers of Greenwood arrived from Missouri in 1876. They set up shop on the banks of Clear Creek and started farming land that they acquired through purchases or donations from others in their community. By 1890, when Greenwood had reached 3,000 people, it had become an important regional center for trade with as far away as Denver and Cheyenne. The lumber industry was also becoming increasingly important due to growing demand for woodchips across North America. During World War II, many local residents enlisted into service and most of those who did so joined forces at local camps along the Front Range near Greeley while fighting Nazi Germany or Japan respectively. This experience led several people including mayor John Wadleigh to establish what would later be called "the Green Berets" detachment of United States Army intelligence officers stationed abroad during the war effort - one of which was Major General James Gavin (later Ulysses S Grant). In addition to its role within wartime society, Greenwood also enjoyed success through peacetime efforts such as hosting celebrates such as county fairs and festival events throughout the 1920s-1970s mostly centered around social/cultural topics like baseball/football games etc., but also featuring music performances etc.. As time passed though economic conditions began deteriorating nationally; jobs dried up; automobiles became available; crime rates spiraled out of control; few new houses were built until recently (2007) when restrictions on zoning changed city code making this resurgence possible... In short: greenwood has bounced back & overcome various issues over time including being tax delinquent multiple times over...& having less than 1% vacancy
Greenwood was founded in 1875 by James Greenwood and his wife Eliza Jane. They named the town after the nearby Greenwood Forest, which they had seen while on a trip to Colorado Springs. The first store in Greenwood opened in 1876. The town grew rapidly and by 1890, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1902, Greenwood became an incorporated city.
