Greenwood, Colorado has a rich ammunition history dating back to the early 1800s. Ammunition manufacturing began in Greenwood in 1875 and continued until the early 1920s. The town was once home to over 100 businesses that manufactured various types of ammunition, including rifle and shotgun bullets, pistol rounds, and artillery rounds. Today, Greenwood is a small community located east of Denver with a population of just over 1000 residents. The earliest firearms in the area were rifles and shotguns made by pioneer hunters and trappers. These frontier rifles were designed for long range hunting and shooting at game miles away from where they were used. Ammunition production in Greenwood began with shothells developed by local gunsmiths under the name “Powder Belt”. This type of round was created by adding lead slugs to Winchester bullet casings to create a harder projectile that could travel farther before breaking up on impact or detonating prematurely within the barrel. In 1875, George Stephenson founded the Greenwood Arsenal Company which manufactured cannonballs, rifle bullets, pistols rounds, artillery projectiles (including firebrands), as well as many other items such as bridles and saddles. One of Stephenson’s primary goals when founding the company was to provide affordable ammunition for farmers throughout eastern Colorado who lacked access to high-quality military grade ordnance products. As America entered World War I based on their belief that war would be fought primarily on land rather than through sea or air warfare, Greenwood became an important producer of munitions due to its location within easy reach of both suppliers and consumers across North America. After hostilities ceased in 1918, munitions production slowly decreased due to technological advancements that made firing projectiles more difficult without damage or explosion risky . By 1922 however., arsenals had been closed down at all but one business in Greenwood thanks largely to prohibitionism which had begun reigning during this time period across much of America . In addition , many factories closure occurred during this time because there was no need for commodities that were now being produced exclusively for prohibitionist purposes . During this time period large portions of what is now Rocky Mountain region were still undeveloped so there was no need for manufactures here either ..... Although post-war years saw some resurgence (primarily with regards to importation intoColorado) none=============================================================================================of these factories reopened .....production essentially stopped completely ......except one .................which incidentally restarted operations soon after repeal ......... In 1919 George Stephenson founded another munitions company called Armstrong Rubber Company which specialized in rubber ammo labels/stickers and other associated merchandise..Armstrong Ammo started making shells specifically for rifle cartridges while also producing handguns (shotguns only until 1924). Armors main product line consisted mostly of lead shotshells (shotguns included) along with brass cases (.22 caliber only until 1925). Other popular products include flares/lighters/compass watches etc., but those are not currently available online anywhere
