Greeley, Colorado is a city in the Rocky Mountains of North America. Greeley was founded in 1868 by George A. Smith as a cattle and sheep ranch on the edge of what is now Lakewood Boulevard and Centennial Avenue. The first post office in Greeley was established in 1869. The population of Greeley was 7,549 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO metropolitan area. The location on the edge of what is now Lakewood Boulevard and Centennial Avenue made it an early center for mining operations; gold was discovered here in 1865 by prospectors working for James Hutton and his partner David Whitcomb Mackenzie. In 1868, George A. Smith opened up Greeley's first business: a store selling goods to miners who had struck gold on nearby Montrose Hill just east of town. By 1870, most of Greeley's buildings were built with wooden frames or adobe bricks—a cheap alternative to stone construction then common in Plains County—and dirt roads ran through the town to connect it with other settlements near gold fields throughout North America. Greeley was founded in 1871 by German immigrants as a logging town on the banks of the Green River. The name "Greeley" meaning "the place where Christians meet" is derived from this original site. The first post office in Greeley was established in 1876. The first store opened in 1880. In 1889, Greeley became an incorporated city. In 1907, the first school built in Greeley was named after John Fenton Hughes (1859-1937), an early settler and Mayor of Greeley from 1902 to 1904 who also served as Deputy Sheriff for Douglas County and member of the State Senate from 1909 to 1912. Hughes also donated land for a new college which would be known as Northern Colorado University (now Northern Arizona University). In 1923, the community around Central Park began to grow rapidly due to its location near interstate highways 24 and 287. This led to the construction of what is now called Central Park Drive within the limits of Greeley City Limits in 1925; it remains one of only a few downtown areas still maintained by central government control today. An additional commercial area developed south of Interstate 25 near Airport Boulevard in 1984 when Ed Ascheim's company bought 8 acres (3 hectares) adjacent to his airline hangar lot on what is now Air Cargo Rd., just east of I-25 exit 123B/Central Park Dr.; Ascheim leased his property back to Gleason Aviation & Helicopters before he died in 1994 at age 102 years old with aircraft dealership located next door on airport Blvd.). This growth combined with quality public schools helped make Greeley one of America's most diverse cities; it has more than 15 languages spoken here including Spanish and Tagalog among others In 1998–1999, following passage of state statute SB527 which created Aurora Community Schools District #1 pursuant to Financing District III authorized pursuant thereto by Statute SB2142 (May 9th 1998)), all but two elementary schools operated by Aurora Community Schools were consolidated into newly created SB527Districts #2 through V within Greeley City Limits effective September 1st 1999 under direction that each Local Education Agency operate no less than four elementary schools therein providing full funding equivalent thereto plus services unparalleled by other local districts operating within same boundaries without prior written agreement between agencies or their respective governing boards nor any reciprocal arrangement entered into between agencies since consolidation; such Agreement creating SB527Districts #2 through V authorizing operation thereof shall expire December 31st 2021 thereby terminating all prior arrangements existing therein between agencies effective September 1st 1999 except for those relationships currently operative between agency governing boards hereinbefore mentioned ; hereafterinafter referred collectively hereinto as "AGencies".
