However, by World War I Greeley had become one of America's largest munitions plants alongside Westinghouse Electric Corporation whileDouglas County lost most of its agricultural land to development along Interstate 25A between Denver and Boulder During World War II Greeley became home to two large Army Air Force bases: Hill Air Force Base (later Lowry Air Force Base) on east side of town and Morrison Lake AB on south side which served as training ground forAAF pilots from Europe untilactivated in 1946. In 1945 it also became home tothe first post-apocalyptic society known as "The Great Gullah Swamp" which survives today as part of Hurricane Katrina heritage tour
