Greeley is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 5,712 at the 2010 census. Greeley is home to the Greeley-Aurora Municipal Airport and the University of Colorado at Boulder. The first people to live in what is now Greeley were Native Americans. They may have come from the area around Fort Leavenworth or Park City. The first European traveler to visit Greeley was John Atchison in 1864. He stopped here on his way to Chicago. In 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant's army passed through Greeley on their way westward during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, two brothers by the name of McCarty built a sawmill and millrace which still operates today as McCarty Falls State Park. It was in this park that US President Ulysses S. Grant delivered his famous speech commemorating American victory over Mexico in 1848 known as "The Gettysburg Address". In 1870, George Atherton founded what is now called Atherton Insurance Company which became one of Colorado's largest insurance companies with operations throughout the state including Greeley until it merged into Allstate Corporation in 1989. According to The Gazetteer ofColorado (1892), "the first post office established in this locality was that of Aurora on Main Street; it was discontinued February 12th, 1893." That year, GreeLEY incorporated as an unincorporated village under the name "Greely". On December 4th of that year residents voted 1-0-1 to change their name to "Greeley-Aurora" after merging with neighboring Aurora Township.. This merger resulted in creation of one municipality larger than any before it - all while being within Weld County! It wasn't until 1907 when a schoolhouse (later renamed First Presbyterian Church) was built and located on South Euclid Avenue that people began moving into what would become known as downtown Greeley proper - complete with its imposing brick building and accompanying streetscape features! For many years thereafter, downtown served as both commercial and social center for those living near Interstate 25/Broadway Boulevard outside of city limits! Downtown also hosted numerous cultural events such as Jazz Festivals etc., through out its many years existence!
