Greeley, Colorado is a city located in Weld County, Colorado. Greeley was founded on January 12, 1876, by John C. Fremont and his brothers. The current mayor of Greeley is Steve Adler. As of the 2010 census, the population was 855. Greeley is a town that straddles the border of Weld County and Park County and has a combined total area of 41 square miles (106 square kilometers). The physical geography of Greeley consists mostly of rolling hills with small valleys between them; it has an average elevation of . The climate in Greeley varies from hot summers to cold winters with some occasional periods where it experiences both highs and lows within a short period time span. The city’s namesake comes from Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer who was killed during the Battle of Little Big Horn in July 1894 while leading his 7th Cavalry Regiment against the Sioux Indians near what is now Fort Collins. General Crook awarded him posthumous recognition as “the national hero” for this victory. In 1896 General Sherman moved westward through Kansas into Oklahoma Territory and fought their last major battle at Washita River Bridge at Chickasha Creek which resulted in over 50% Indian loss including Custer’s brother-in-law General George Armstrong Smith who also lost an arm in that engagement. This destroyed most Of Indian resistance to white settlement within western Oklahoma so when news reached Fort Worth about these events they named their new county after General Armistead Maupin who had played a significant role in stopping this advance – though he never lived to see it happen because he died weeks after the battle at Waco Texan Branch Railroad Station on November 6, 1886). Municipal services are provided by City Council which meets twice weekly except for special meetings called by Mayor Steve Adler or City Manager Dave Kappenberger which occur once every two months depending upon business items being considered or amendments being made to ordinances passed by Councilmembers during regular session/ annual meeting days like August 1st thru May 31st etc etc etc etc…. On rare occasions such as when there are more than six council members but less than eleven members present then either Kappenberger or Mayor Adler will preside over hearing without vote….. Greeley is located on the eastern edge of the Rocky Mountains and bordered by the towns of Aspen to the north, Durango to the east, Arapahoe County to the south and west, and Park city to the northwest. Greeley’s history dates back over 100 years and began with one man named George Sarton who settled in what is now Greeley in 1881. One hundred years later in 1984, Greeley became an incorporated town when it ratified a charter from Pueblo County. The early settlers were farmers who relied on local livestock for their sustenance. By 1907 there were 3 businesses operating within Greeley limits; 2 grocery stores and 1 post office. In 1925 there was only 1 business within city limits; a bakery which closed down after only 2 years due to economic hardship caused by prohibition raids by U.S. troops during World War II. In 1951 an electric company started up shop in downtown Greeley; this led to many new businesses opening up throughout subsequent decades as various industries grew around downtown: trucking services*, printing* [*cotton gin], real estate* [*multiplex theaters], medical practices*, [*hospitality] and more! The city grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, thanks to its location near the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) and its status as a coal mining town. Greeley became one of the most industrialized cities in America during this time, with factories such as Singer Sewing Machines, Swenzer's Brewery, and American Tobacco Company located along First Avenue. In 1916, Greeley was renamed Denver after Mile High Club member Admiral David D. Graeber.
