Greeley is a city in Larimer County, Colorado, United States. The population was 54,075 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the fourth-largest city in Colorado Springs and the largest city east of Interstate 25. It lies on both sides of the Cache Creek Canyon and across from Rocky Mountain National Park. The first Europeans to reach Greeley were Captain John Smith and his men who explored the area in 1764–65. A post office called Greeley was established in 1872, and became a town in 1903. The current name originated with an agreement reached between representatives of Denver and Fort Collins to use whichever name appeared first on a map of those towns. Greeley had been proposed as "Colorado City" while Fort Collins had been proposed as "Fort Lyon". A cotton gin was built by James Neely Richardson near what would become downtown Greeley in 1881; this led to growth around that location. The Richardsons founded Pikes Peak Brewing Company in 1865; it became one of the largest breweries in America before being purchased by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 1999. The original Main Street bridge over Cache Creek canyon was destroyed by a flood on July 16, 1916, but a new bridge was constructed soon afterward which still stands today. The Bennett family ran Greely's first grocery store from their home on Third Street until it closed its doors for good c1896 after being involved with local politics for more than 40 years (it reopened later under new ownership). One aspect that made Bennett's grocery stand out from other small stores at the time was that they did not carry any meat or produce because they believed that shoppers would prefer to go to larger stores where such items could be bought fresh rather than purchasing them frozen or canned. Another example of how Bennett's operated differently from other grocery chains is that he never charged sales tax on purchases over $10 until he opened his second store two decades later! His grandson continues this practice today at their third store located next door! In 1907, George Hearn started operating an oil well near present day intersection of First Avenue South and Pershing Road; this led to development around Hearn Ranch which now includes much activity including shopping centers, restaurants, hotels and residential developments along First Avenue South between Keystone Boulevard/Sutherland Drive and Pershing Road/Hearn Road

Greeley is a city in Weld County, Colorado, United States. Greeley was founded in 1876 by John Fetterman and his brother-in-law David ADAMS. The city has a population of 107,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Weld County and the 14th largest municipality in Colorado. Greeley is home to both CU Boulder and Northern Arizona University. The first residents of Greeley were pioneer miners who prospected for gold near the confluence of the Green River and Cache La Poudre Rivers. They named their settlement "Greely" after George Washington's birthplace, Mount Vernon, Virginia. In 1875, Fetterman began construction on what would become known as The First Methodist Church in Greeley. He also built a mill that became one of the most important engines used by Greeley businesses until it was destroyed by fire in 1902. In 1876, David ADAMS founded Centennial Land Company which purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of present day downtown Greeley from George Simpson for $5 per acre ($25 per hectare). This land had been deeded to him by his father-in-law John Fetterman years earlier while still living at Mount Vernon Township southeast of Denver. Adams established an agricultural society with himself as president and others including Aaronson & Co., Weimer Brothers Hardware Store, Wills Bros./Boyd Glass Works and several other small businesses to provide support for his new community center and schoolschildren during this early phase of development."Adamsmondevelopment scheme called for erection two tall brick buildings on either side (now CU Boulder's Student Union Building east side)of Main Street junction; these buildings would house Adams' personal residence ('Adams House'), storerooms ('Adams Mills','the first Masonic lodge west of Denver')and offices for Centennial Land Company(forerunner to Denver Chamber Of Commerce)." Held at various locations along State Highway 24 between Fort Collins (near where it now intersects Interstate 25), Golden (west), Canon City (southwest), Trinidad (northwest) and Longmont (east), Centennial Land Company successfully completed its offerings including: meeting rooms/libraries/committee Rooms,'a schoolhouse/library/grocery store,'an assay office/courtroom,'a hotel.'" Centennial lands company continued operations until 1907 when it merged with another land company which became Gifford Transportation Corporation effective November 1st 1907."As part of Gifford Transportation Corporation purchase from Centennial Land Company on November 1st 1907", 'all equipment associated with transportation', such as wagons, carts etc., were acquired from Cripple Creek Mining District No 8 operator Jack Ladd.'This included approximately 50 miles (~80 km) worth of track stretching from Golden CO into Montrose County overland through Lyon Lake National Forest to Carbondale CO'." centennial lands company map
Greeley was founded in 1859 by Michael Greeley and is the oldest town in Colorado. The city was named for General John A. Logan, who had led the Mexican-American War. Logan also served as the first mayor of Greeley.
