The History Greeley began as a small settlement called "Greenville" on November 15, 1892 when George French set up a trading post at what is now known as Elmira Street and Cache Creek Boulevard south of present day I-25 and US 12. The post office operated from 1892 until 1912 when it became an incorporated town under name of "Greeley". On January 1, 1916 GreeLEY became an independent city after being annexed by Denver with a population of 52,824 It didn't take long for Greeley to become one of the most prosperous cities in Western Colorado due to its natural resources such as coal and oil production that made it an economically important location for both industry and commerce. Mining operations continued until 1966 when all remaining mines were closed down leaving many men unemployed who turned to crime which further exacerbated social unrest that characterized much Weld County during this time period

Greeley is a city in Prower County, Colorado, United States. The population was 7,854 at the 2010 census. Greeley is the seat of Prower County. Greeley was founded on October 1, 1868 by John H. Greeley and his wife Lucy A. Goodyear as the town of Northglenn in Logan Township. The first post office was established in Northglenn on October 3, 1868. On November 15, 1870, the town became Greeley when it absorbed part of the nearby village of Southglen. In 1872, Greeley had its own railroad station and several stores and businesses opened up along the new line. By 1880, there were over 100 residents in what is now Prower County and Greeley had become an important commercial center for southern Larimer County
On October 14, 1879, Greeley was named the capital of Colorado after its incorporation as a state. The town became an important center for mining and cattle operations in the early years of the state. Greeley experienced several devastating fires in 1907 and 1908 that destroyed much of the downtown and left the community with few belongings and no buildings. Despite these challenges, Greeley continued to grow during the late 19th century and during World War I it served as a supply depot for military forces in Colorado. In 1933, Greeley became home to the first university in Colorado when University of Denver began operation there.
