The captain organized the pioneers into two groups: those who would move west and those who would stay behind to help build irrigation canals and other infrastructure for Scotts Valley Farms which stretched from north to south across what is now downtown Grand Junction. The original town site was located on an area that today includes most of downtown Grand Junction as well as parts of what are now Northglenn and Northfield (including part of what is now Douglas County). The town began to take form soon after it was platted by James Aiken on November 17th,1867. At first, Aiken named his new town “Scottsdale” but quickly changed it to “Grand Junction” after surveying his land eastward towards Aspen Creek and Pikes Peak mountain ranges he saw looming ahead on his map including Mount Lafayette (now El Paso County) which he thought would be special because it overlooked both Aspen Creek valley floor and Pikes Peak range – making it an ideal location for a future city center or commercial district due to its strategic location between two major river valleys as well as easy access via wagon road fromScotts Valley farmlands stretching eastward into Larimer County &western Kansas Railroad tracks running southwest from Denver
