Potter built a log cabin on the east side of Isabella Creek where he later made a flour mill and started an agricultural ranch that included wheat, oats, potatoes and other crops until 1900 when he sold his land to Auguste Chouteau for $10 per acre ($240 per square mile). In 1876 an act was passed by Congress authorizing surveyors to divide Larimer County into two parts: one would be known as Denver County (later part of Kansas) while the other would become Grand Junction County (later part of Colorado). George Aiken was appointed as county commissioner which gave him jurisdiction over all but 6 square miles of what is today Grand Junction The townsite chosen for Grand Junction was founded on November 14th 1888 by Wm Henschel with money given by Augustus Mifflin in order to build a post office and store at this location It wasn’t until 1895 that a school began teaching students grades 1-6 On July 15th 1906 , ranchers Cornelius Kapp and Edward AAhern established Sheep Creek Ranch just south of present day Interstate 25 near Aspen Highlands Ski Resort

The first permanent settler in what is now Grand Junction was George Hance who arrived on July 7, 1868 from Missouri and named his new homestead “Hance” after himself and his father-in-law James Ahern. The town began as a trading post between Santa Fe Trail travelers and other settlements in central Colorado until it became an important transportation hub for goods reaching the Meatpacking District of Denver from early on. In 1887 when local resident Lorenzo Dow started constructing a toll road across Mineral Creek to connect his land with nearby Denver, he called himself "The Father of Grand Junction". The name stuck and gradually morphed into its present form - Grande Junction - as businesses grew up around downtown to take advantage of easy access to Interstate 25 (the only two routes then connecting the Front Range with downtownDenver). Today's skyline dates back to that original boom time for Grand Junction - including One Financial Plaza which opened in 1993 as one of Colorado's first high-rise buildings Aurora took over control of downtown business during the 1990s while Downtown Grand Junction went through some difficult times but bounced back by creating a new multimillion dollar development called Sustainability Square that includes civic space including a library, cultural center and parkette adjacent to Red Rocks Park
