Grand Junction is a small town in Southern Colorado, located on the edge of the Rocky Mountains. The population was 7,253 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Grand Junction were two groups of Native Americans who lived near Fort Collins and traded with other tribes. In 1806, Spanish traders discovered gold in this area and began to arrive here for prospecting. Gold Mining started in earnest around 1859 and soon much of southeastern Colorado was involved in mining operations. A millrace running through the downtown square still retains evidence from early days when water was brought down by horses and then used to wash away ore from mineshafts. In 1861, an act of Congress created Park County as a new county within Colorado Territory. The location for Grand Junction made perfect sense since it lay on a crossroads between several important trails that crossed the Rockies: The Mexican Trail ran through town ( Directions ), while US 26 ran east-west just south of it ( Directions ). As more people moved into this newly formed county, they quickly realized that they needed a place to live and businesses quickly sprang up to meet their needs. Roads were built through town so that goods could be hauled fast and efficiently to marketplaces all over western Colorado Springs; many homes were built close to commercial enterprises so residents could watch shipping leave or enter portables filled with precious minerals during those busy months around Thanksgiving! By 1870, there were 400 businesses in town alone! It wasn’t until 1907 that a post office was established here; at first it served only local residents but soon enough mail had begun flowing out into neighboring counties too! Over time, more passenger trains arrived here which contributed greatly to growth – not only did people come for shopping but also for work during big storms like those that struck Denver back in 1912 or 1913 ( both events are documented online ). When World War I came along everyone wanted Hendry Air Force Base nearby because munitions production became very important; indeed, RAF Hendry would later be renamed Grand Junction Air Force Base after General George Custer who died there while fighting Indians! However things turned out differently when war ended because instead of being closed down like most factories across America due to wartime restrictions various companies opened up including Boeing Aircraft Manufacturing Company which led directly to Aeronautics Corporation being founded here! Not long afterwards other large companies followed such as Walmart who acquired Kirtland AFB adjacent to town – today’s Walmart Supercenter complex sits atop one of those old Army barracks once occupied by Lockheed Martin missile manufacturers . And what about transportation? Well before Interstate 25 even crossed our front yard we had Stagecoach Lines running service between Carbondale/Denver (Directions ) and Pueblo ( Directions ) making life pretty easy for folks living along I-25a back then!
